The Wonder Called ‘Kindness’

So many gods, so many creeds,

So many paths that wind and wind,

While just the art of being kind

Is all the sad world needs.

-Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Our kids are growing up in a world where the pleasures of kindness astonish us. The corniest or silliest stories of kindness about so trivializing of the things, matter most to most people. The pleasures of kindness were once well-known, but now, it’s a thing of the past.

Our world seems like a sad place where people are utterly lacking in natural generosity. The moment you open the newspaper, you can draw in the suffering, the pain, the palpable sense of lack of kindness.

Is this kindness so rare? Are there any authentically kind people anymore? Is it even existent? Or is it a thing of the past?

Our very survival even today, depends upon the acts a kindness of so many people. Right from the moment of our birth, we are under the care and kindness of our parents; later in life, when facing the sufferings of disease and old age, we are again dependent on the kindness of others. If at the beginning and end of our lives we depend upon others kindness, why then in the middle, when we have the opportunity, should we not act kindly toward others?

Kindness and compassion are among the principal things that make our lives meaningful. They are a source of lasting happiness and joy. They are the foundation of a good heart, the heart of one who acts out of a desire to help others. Through kindness, and thus, through affection, honesty, truth, and justice toward everyone else, we ensure our own benefit. This is a matter of common sense. Consideration for others is worthwhile because our happiness is inextricably bound up with the happiness of others.

Kindness isn’t an option, it’s a necessity, especially in the world that we live today where whatever we can do, person to person, moment to moment is kindness. We have the ability to utterly transform another person's life through the simplest of actions and the capacity to return us to the very core of our humanity.

Kindness can, and does, open hearts, cross boundaries, and change lives. Every day offers a new opportunity to be kind. Whether for a friend, a neighbor, coworker, or even Mother Earth, you'll never regret taking the time to show someone you care.

With Everyday Kindness, we, at Sat Paul Mittal School, have endeavored to provide easy ways to add compassion, love, and gratitude to the days of our students and into the days of the people around them. Little acts -like mowing a neighbour's yard, preparing a hot drink for a sibling, visiting residents at a senior center, writing a thank-you note to an affectionate teacher, leading a neighborhood recycling program or just giving up the window seat to a friend- can make someone’s day.

And the generosity doesn't stop there-by simply being kind, you'll jump-start a ripple effect of good deeds. You'll find that when you go out of your way to brighten someone else's day, you'll also inspire friends, family, and even strangers to do nice things for others in their lives. When a friend sees you donating books to a local school, she may be inspired to volunteer to read at story hour. When a neighbour notices you shoveling snow for the older lady next door, the next time he heads to the grocery store he'll remember to check in and see if he can pick up some items for her. There are no isolated acts of kindness. Kindness is one of the pillars of the world.

"Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened.”

-Lord Buddha

So what are you waiting for? Join the bandwagon to make the world a better place to live. The world is your oyster.
